Анотація: This book explores English single sheet satirical prints published from 1780-1820, the people who made those prints, and the businesses that sold them. It examines how these objects were made, how they were sold, and how both the complexity of the production process and the necessity to sell shaped and constrained the satiric content these objects contained. It argues that production, sale, and environment are crucial to understanding late-Georgian satirical prints. A majority of these prints were, after all, published in London and were therefore woven into the commercial culture of the Great Wen. Because of this city and its culture, the activities of the many individuals involved in transforming a single satirical design into a saleable and commercially viable object were underpinned by a nexus of making, selling, and consumption. Neglecting any one part of this nexus does a disservice both to the late-Georgian satirical print, these most beloved objects of British art, and to the story of their late-Georgian apotheosis – a story that James Baker develops not through the designs these objects contained, but rather through those objects and the designs they contained in the making.

Анотація: This volume offers a new and innovative understanding of the role of the media in the Portuguese Empire during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It sheds light on the interactions between communications, government policy, economics, society and culture. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book focuses on varied themes including the expansion of printing, the development of newspapers and radio, state propaganda in metropolitan Portugal and within her colonies, censorship, the use of media by opposition and nationalist groups, and comparative developments within Britain and her empire. The book aims to encourage an understanding of the articulations and tensions between the different groups that participated, willingly or not, in the establishment, maintenance and overthrow of the Portuguese Empire in Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tome e Principe, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, India, and East Timor.

Анотація: This book approaches the Scottish women’s suffrage campaign from the point of view of the popular press. It investigates how the press engaged with the women’s suffrage movement; how suffragettes were portrayed in newspapers; and how different groups attempted to use the press to get their message into the public sphere. Scottish suffrage campaigners acknowledged the need for press coverage from the start of the campaign in the 1870s, but the arrival of the militant suffragettes completely transformed newspaper coverage. The Scottish newspapers were particularly interested in suffragette activities during local by-elections and their hounding of local anti-suffrage MPs such as Herbert Asquith. The book also investigates the impact of the First World War on the movement.

Анотація: This book analyzes the conduct of press policy in Bohemia from the Revolutions of 1848 through the period of the Tabory, 1867-71. In the aftermath of the revolutions, the Habsburg state, far from constituting an historical relic, proved itself boldly innovative, inaugurating liberal reforms, most importantly the rule of law. While the reforms helped it to survive its immediate challenges, they nonetheless, quite paradoxically, created an environment in which the periodical press continued to advance perspectives emblematic of the revolution, even during the era of Neoabsolutism. This new legal environment fostered the rise of the bourgeois public sphere, as theorized by Jurgen Habermas, and the very political movements that would contribute to its demise, as signaled in the Tabory campaign of 1867-71. At the nexus of civil society and the state stood the provincial Habsburg officials responsible for public order and security. Their experience was one of endeavoring to balance the ideals of the rule of law imposed by the Imperial center and their own vital concerns regarding the survival of the Monarchy. This work, for the first time, concentrates on the role of these officials who determined what would—and would not—appear in print. .

Анотація: This book explores the measures taken by the newly re-installed monarchy and its supporters to address the drastic events of the previous two decades. Profoundly preoccupied with - and, indeed, anxious about - the uses and representations of the nation’s recent troubled past, the returning royalist regime heavily relied upon the dissemination, in popular print, of prescribed varieties of remembering and forgetting in order to actively shape the manner in which the Civil Wars, the Regicide, and the Interregnum were to be embedded in the nation’s collective memory.  This study rests on a broad foundation of documentary evidence drawn from hundreds of widely distributed and affordable pamphlets and broadsheets that were intended to shape popular memories, and interpretations, of recent events. It thus makes a substantial original contribution to the fields of early modern memory studies and the history of the English Civil Wars and early Restoration.

Анотація: This book examines a critical period in British children’s publishing, from the earliest days of dedicated publishing firms for Black British audiences to the beginnings of the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK. Taking a historical approach that includes education acts, Black protest, community publishing and children’s literature prizes, the study investigates the motivation behind both independent and mainstream publishing firm decisions to produce books for a specifically Black British audience. Beginning with a consideration of early reading schemes that incorporated Black and Asian characters, the book continues with a history of one of the earliest presses to publish for children, Bogle L’Ouverture. Other chapters look at the influence of community-based and independent presses, the era of multiculturalism and anti-racism, the effect of racially-motivated violence on children’s publishing, and the dubious benefit of awards for Black British publishing. The volume will appeal to children’s literature scholars, librarians, teachers, education-policy makers and Black British historians.

Анотація: ‘Sophisticated, lucid and expansive, Kate Newell’s intervention in the field of contemporary adaptation studies is one of the most important scholarly contributions to the field in recent years. It assimilates key historical positions and weaves them through new and inventive networks of production and reception that go well beyond conventional notions of what adaptation means and well beyond the usual texts and practices where adaptation has traditionally been located.’ -       Timothy Corrigan, Professor of Cinema and Media Studies, University of Pennsylvania, USA, and author of Film and Literature (2011)   ‘Readers eager to see adaptation studies move beyond films based on novels, stories, plays, or comic books will welcome Kate Newell’s focus on the “print-based adaptation networks” represented by novelizations, illustrated novels, literary maps, pop-up books, and ekphrastic poetry and prose. Newell’s illuminating accounts of adaptations that involve not so much changes in media as changes in modality offer compelling new ways to think about the relationships between texts and the readers who love them.’ -       Thomas Leitch, Professor of English at the University of Delaware, USA, and most recently the editor of The Oxford Handbook of Adaptation Studies.     This book addresses print-based modes of adaptation that have not conventionally been theorized as adaptations—such as novelization, illustration, literary maps, pop-up books, and ekphrasis. It discusses a broad range of image- and word-based adaptations of popular literary works, among them The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Daisy Miller, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Moby Dick, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The study reveals that commercial and franchise works and ephemera play a key role in establishing a work’s iconography. Newell argues that the cultural knowledge and memory of a work is constructed through reiterative processes and proposes a network-based model of adaptation to illuminate this. Whereas most adaptation studies prioritize film and television, this book’s focus on print invites new entry points for the study of adaptation.   Kate Newell teaches courses in literature and adaptation at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia.
