Анотація: This is a complete update of the first edition of Level Crossing Methods in Stochastic Models, which was published in 2008. Level crossing methods are a set of sample-path based mathematical tools used in applied probability to establish reliable probability distributions. Since the basis for solving any applied probability problem requires a reliable probability distribution, Level Crossing Methods in Stochastic Models, Second Edition is a useful tool for all researchers working on stochastic application problems, including inventory control, queueing theory, reliability theory, actuarial ruin theory, renewal theory, pharmacokinetics, and related Markov processes. The second edition includes a new section with a novel derivation of the Benes series for M/G/1 queues. It provides new results on the service time for three M/G/I queueing models with bounded workload. It analyzes new applications of queues where zero-wait customers get exceptional service, including several examples on M/G/1 queues, and a new section on G/M/1 queues. Additionally, there are two other important new sections: on the level-crossing derivation of the finite time-t probability distributions of excess, age, and total life, in renewal theory; and on a level-crossing analysis of a risk model in Insurance. The original Chapter 10 has been split into two chapters: the new chapter 10 is on renewal theory, and the first section of the new Chapter 11 is on a risk model. More explicit use is made of the renewal reward theorem throughout, and many technical and editorial changes have been made to facilitate readability. Percy H. Brill, Ph.D., is a Professor emeritus at the University of Windsor, Canada. Dr. Brill is the creator of the level crossing method for analyzing stochastic models. He has published extensively in stochastic processes, queueing theory and related models, especially using level crossing methods.

Анотація: This book presents classical Markov Decision Processes (MDP) for real-life applications and optimization. MDP allows users to develop and formally support approximate and simple decision rules, and this book showcases state-of-the-art applications in which MDP was key to the solution approach. The book is divided into six parts. Part 1 is devoted to the state-of-the-art theoretical foundation of MDP, including approximate methods such as policy improvement, successive approximation and infinite state spaces as well as an instructive chapter on Approximate Dynamic Programming. It then continues with five parts of specific and non-exhaustive application areas. Part 2 covers MDP healthcare applications, which includes different screening procedures, appointment scheduling, ambulance scheduling and blood management. Part 3 explores MDP modeling within transportation. This ranges from public to private transportation, from airports and traffic lights to car parking or charging your electric car. Part 4 contains three chapters that illustrates the structure of approximate policies for production or manufacturing structures. In Part 5, communications is highlighted as an important application area for MDP. It includes Gittins indices, down-to-earth call centers and wireless sensor networks. Finally Part 6 is dedicated to financial modeling, offering an instructive review to account for financial portfolios and derivatives under proportional transactional costs. The MDP applications in this book illustrate a variety of both standard and non-standard aspects of MDP modeling and its practical use. This book should appeal to readers for practitioning, academic research and educational purposes, with a background in, among others, operations research, mathematics, computer science, and industrial engineering.

Анотація: The Second Edition of this book presents the state of the art in this important field. Marketing decision models constitute a core component of the marketing discipline and the area is changing rapidly, not only due to fundamental advances in methodology and model building, but also because of the recent developments in information technology, the Internet and social media. This Handbook contains eighteen chapters that cover the most recent developments of marketing decision models in different domains of marketing. Compared to the previous edition, thirteen chapters are entirely new, while the remaining chapters represent complete updates and extensions of the previous edition. This new edition of the Handbook has chapters on models for substantive marketing problems, such as customer relationship management, customer loyalty management, website design, Internet advertising, social media, and social networks. In addition, it contains chapters on recent methodological developments that are gaining popularity in the area of marketing decision models, such as structural modeling, learning dynamics, choice modeling, eye-tracking and measurement. The introductory chapter discusses the main developments of the last decade and discusses perspectives for future developments.

Анотація: This book provides a straightforward overview for every researcher interested in stochastic dynamic vehicle routing problems (SDVRPs). The book is written for both the applied researcher looking for suitable solution approaches for particular problems as well as for the theoretical researcher looking for effective and efficient methods of stochastic dynamic optimization and approximate dynamic programming (ADP). To this end, the book contains two parts. In the first part, the general methodology required for modeling and approaching SDVRPs is presented. It presents adapted and new, general anticipatory methods of ADP tailored to the needs of dynamic vehicle routing. Since stochastic dynamic optimization is often complex and may not always be intuitive on first glance, the author accompanies the theoretical ADP-methodology with illustrative examples from the field of SDVRPs. The second part of this book then depicts the application of the theory to a specific SDVRP. The process starts from the real-world application. The author describes a SDVRP with stochastic customer requests often addressed in the literature, and then shows in detail how this problem can be modeled as a Markov decision process and presents several anticipatory solution approaches based on ADP. In an extensive computational study, he shows the advantages of the presented approaches compared to conventional heuristics. To allow deep insights in the functionality of ADP, he presents a comprehensive analysis of the ADP approaches.

Анотація: This book examines higher education institutions that exemplify gendered success whether in terms of the presence of women in senior positions or attempts to change a gendered organisational culture. It reflects a global perspective, drawing on case studies from eleven countries: Australia, Austria, Ireland, India, New Zealand , Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. In each country an organisation has been selected that demonstrate best practice in terms of gendered outcomes or processes. Gendered Success in Higher Education highlights both the importance and the limitations of indicators such as the proportion of women in senior positions. It proposes a new gender agenda, identifies the factors that need to be included in a model of gendered change, and provides important insights into the nature of gendered change globally and how it can be achieved. .

Анотація: This book provides corporate leaders a roadmap for bridging the hierarchical gaps between management and employees to gain company-wide acceptance of transformative strategic initiatives. Serial entrepreneur Hayes Drumwright demonstrates how to take responsibility for uncovering and fusing the inspiration potential at all levels of your organization and neutralizing the culture of fear and apathy that corrodes the team and organizational commitments of your employees. Why is there a divide between management and the employees they lead? Why does each group have such an incredibly hard time understanding each other? Why do over 70% of corporate initiatives fail? It isn’t because of a lack of communication from the top. And talking louder clearly isn’t going to fix it. In Management vs Employees, Hayes Drumwright attacks a problem that has plagued companies for years. How do we bridge the power gap between management and employees in a way that inspires both to engage? Having bootstrapped many businesses in various industries, Drumwright covers the mindset and methodologies leaders must utilize at all levels in organizations to close the gap on apathy and entitlement in order to create an engaged workforce that can scale companies organically. Using stories from both perspectives and multiple company engagements you will learn how to build trust, gather input, distribute accountability, and make those you lead feel like an accomplice in the leader’s master plan. "Hayes Drumwright is a world-class entrepreneur. And in this direct, provocative, and honest book, he describes both the path of his life and the route all of us can take to build something big. Along the way, he shows that a leader’s ultimate job is not to shield people from risk, but to help them learn and grow." Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of Drive and To Sell Is Human "I believe a person who can turn a negative into a positive can never be defeated - this is brilliantly illustrated in Management vs Employees. Hayes Drumwright shares his stories of success, and, importantly, failure with a rare rawness that you will be grateful for again and again." Greg McKeown, New York Times bestselling author of Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less What You'll Learn Better implement change in today’s over-complicated, over-structured enterprise Inspire the enterprise employee base to work with the same passion as the founders and executive team toward corporate success Traverse the often confusing array of new social media tools in order to better understand which tool is appropriate to which situation without creating more social noise Ensure a 70% success rate for new initiatives instead of the current 70% failure rate critical to corporate productivity, profitability, and viability Who This Book Is For The audience is segmented into three separate categories, all of which are clearly addressed and weighed-in on in each chapter: executives, entrepreneurs, middle management.

Анотація: This edited volume focuses on the interplay between organizational identities and firm growth, an area which remains largely unexplored. Firm growth in its various forms is omnipresent in the contemporary business environment, but does not always lead to positive results. At the same time, some organizations are growing faster than their peers, leading to questions of organizational growth antecedents. In addition to the dominant economic reasons in strategic literature, the volume seeks to integrate psychological aspects to the discourse, thereby considering the micro, meso and macro level. By providing both insights into international academic thinking and into practical examples of small and medium-sized companies in Berlin, the authors identify new findings concerning successful growth strategies.

Анотація: This book is dedicated to the issues and complexities of industrial services supply chain management. It analyzes how the transition from products to services can be managed, and how supply chains can be adjusted to reflect this new status quo. The book begins with chapters examining product-service systems structures and servitization – the services infusion process. Next, it presents industrial services as marketing and operations strategy. The focus shifts to service delivery, and this chapter discusses how the actual operations take place. This is followed by an examination of the role of technology and how connected assets are utilized by product vendors in value-creation. The book analyzes the transition from ownership to subscriptions in the pricing decisions chapter. Then the value chain effects chapter offers an overview of the mechanisms through which industrial companies are shortening the distance to end-users and aim for a better position in the value chain. Finally the conclusion addresses theoretical and empirical implications in the industrial services supply chain management.

Анотація: This book presents the underlying theory, model development, and applications of network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in a systematic way. The field of network DEA extends and complements conventional DEA by considering not only inputs and outputs when measuring system efficiency, but also the internal structure of the system being analyzed. By analyzing the efficiency of individual internal components, and more particularly by studying the effects of relationships among components which are modeled and implemented by means of various network structures, the “network DEA” approach is able to help identify and manage the specific components that contribute inefficiencies into the overall systems. This relatively new approach comprises an important analytical tool based on mathematical programming techniques, with valuable implications to production and operations management. The existing models for measuring the efficiency of systems of specific network structures are also discussed, and the relationships between the system and component efficiencies are explored. This book should be able to inspire new research and new applications based on the current state of the art. Performance evaluation is an important task in management, and is needed to (i) better understand the past accomplishments of an organization and (ii) plan for its future development. However, this task becomes rather challenging when multiple performance metrics are involved. DEA is a powerful tool to cope with such issues. For systems or operations composed of interrelated processes, managers need to know how the performances of the various processes evaluated and how they are aggregated to form the overall performance of the system. This book provides an advanced exposition on performance evaluation of systems with network structures. It explores the network nature of most production and operation systems, and explains why network analyses are necessary.

Анотація: This book is an expository introduction to the methodology of sensitivity analysis of model output. It is primarily intended for investigators, students and researchers that are familiar with mathematical models but are less familiar with the techniques for performing their sensitivity analysis. A variety of sensitivity methods have been developed over the years. This monograph helps the analyst in her/his first exploration of this world. The main goal is to foster the recognition of the crucial role of sensitivity analysis methods as the techniques that allow us to gain insights from quantitative models. Also, exercising rigor in performing sensitivity analysis becomes increasingly relevant both to decision makers and modelers. The book helps the analyst in structuring her/his sensitivity analysis quest properly, so as to obtain the correct answer to the corresponding managerial question. The first part of the book covers Deterministic Methods, including Tornado Diagrams; One-Way Sensitivity Analysis; Differentiation-Based Methods and Local Sensitivity Analysis with Constraints. The second part looks at Probabilistic Methods, including Regression-Based methods, Variance-Based Methods, and Distribution-Based methods. The final section looks at Applications, including capital budgeting, sensitivity analysis in climate change modelling and in the risk assessment of a lunar space mission.

Анотація: Missy Maker is a middle school girl who loves math and fashion. She sees math in everything she does. She tries to hide this from her friends, because she thinks it’s too geeky. Missy hears that the school math club needs more members, but she’s worried about what her friends will think if she joins, and she’s already committed to joining the fashion club. After an epic internal struggle and with the support of her peers and her quirky, loving family, Missy finds that she can be both a Mathlete and a Fashionista. Missy figures out how to bring the two clubs together to help both groups win. In the process, she discovers that she can openly excel in math and science and still be popular with her peers. She also learns how her math and science skills can help her artistic endeavors. Gain an inside perspective on what it’s like when you love math and science and happen to be a girl. Fashion Figures highlights the societal and internal pressures preteen and early-teen girls often face when they excel in these subjects, and it shows strategies for overcoming barriers to being themselves and doing what they love while still fitting in socially.

Анотація: This textbook on Linear and Nonlinear Optimization is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in operations research and related fields. It is both literate and mathematically strong, yet requires no prior course in optimization. As suggested by its title, the book is divided into two parts covering in their individual chapters LP Models and Applications; Linear Equations and Inequalities; The Simplex Algorithm; Simplex Algorithm Continued; Duality and the Dual Simplex Algorithm; Postoptimality Analyses; Computational Considerations; Nonlinear (NLP) Models and Applications; Unconstrained Optimization; Descent Methods; Optimality Conditions; Problems with Linear Constraints; Problems with Nonlinear Constraints; Interior-Point Methods; and an Appendix covering Mathematical Concepts. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises. The book is based on lecture notes the authors have used in numerous optimization courses the authors have taught at Stanford University. It emphasizes modeling and numerical algorithms for optimization with continuous (not integer) variables. The discussion presents the underlying theory without always focusing on formal mathematical proofs (which can be found in cited references). Another feature of this book is its inclusion of cultural and historical matters, most often appearing among the footnotes. "This book is a real gem. The authors do a masterful job of rigorously presenting all of the relevant theory clearly and concisely while managing to avoid unnecessary tedious mathematical details. This is an ideal book for teaching a one or two semester masters-level course in optimization – it broadly covers linear and nonlinear programming effectively balancing modeling, algorithmic theory, computation, implementation, illuminating historical facts, and numerous interesting examples and exercises. Due to the clarity of the exposition, this book also serves as a valuable reference for self-study." Professor Ilan Adler, IEOR Department, UC Berkeley "A carefully crafted introduction to the main elements and applications of mathematical optimization. This volume presents the essential concepts of linear and nonlinear programming in an accessible format filled with anecdotes, examples, and exercises that bring the topic to life. The authors plumb their decades of experience in optimization to provide an enriching layer of historical context. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and masters students in management science, operations research, and related fields." Michael P. Friedlander, IBM Professor of Computer Science, Professor of Mathematics, University of British Columbia.
