Анотація: This book addresses three important concepts in the economy—competition, innovation, and growth—using various cases and available data in Japan and other countries. First, the authors discuss competition, including global competition, to provide a better understanding of competition policy in Japan. Then, the authors examine the effects of human capital and alliance on innovation while providing new innovation indicators. Moreover, the authors examine growth from the perspective of corporate strategy such as acquisition, including international comparison. The interplay of competition, innovation, and growth has been prevalent in Japan, and it still acts as a catalyst for stimulating the stagnant economy. A better understanding of competition, innovation, and growth provides the tools to reinvigorate the stagnant economy in Japan and to reinforce the economy in other countries where the period of rapid growth has ended.

Анотація: This book takes a holistic approach to explore how business is being conducted in China and India, and to analyze the factors that influence business decisions in present times. In doing so the book seeks to develop a fuller understanding of the present ‘context’ within the two Asian nations, drawing upon a complete understanding of the culture, history and behaviour of the society and its institutions. The authors probe an area that has not been widely addressed before and seek to provide a finer analysis of the influences behind day-to-day business operations. This study has widespread appeal as it covers business processes at three different levels: macro-level, including government policies and institutions; meso-level, organisations and communities; and micro-level, individuals within business. Not only appealing to scholars, senior executives, business professionals and policy-makers, this book will also provide an interdisciplinary examination of how business is conducted in China and India, and will be valuable to anyone with a general interest in Asian business.

Анотація: This book provides readers a holistic and pragmatic approach towards supply management in China. It elaborates on how supply management should integrate the optimum level, and a combination of quality, cost and delivery. In addition to serving as a guide on how to address cultural barriers, apply supply tools and concepts, it also illustrates the best practices in supply management in China. It draws from a large number of best practices of companies from automotive to railway, to convince other functional departments and higher management that supply management plays the most fundamental role in any organization due to the high number of value adding activities which are coming from suppliers. These practices have been derived by a multi-methodical approach including interviews with supply management leaders from industry and experts in academia, making it as unique and a suitable a guide for practitioners and academics.

Анотація: In this book, Korean multinational enterprises management strategies in China are analyzed. China is re centering Asia around its newfound economic might, even as neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea will remain more economically developed for generations to come. How do Asian companies adapt to the Chinese market? In this fascinating study, Haiying Kang and Jie Shen investigate how Korean enterprises have adapted human resources practices to the evolving corporate climate in China. Unorthodox blends of culture, legal expectations, and more make the market a truly interesting one to explore HRM practices on the margins. Compelling for academics in HRM but also related social sciences, HR practitioners, and corporate leaders alike, this book is a timely look at new Asian corporate cultures. .

Анотація: This book explores the historical roots of rapid economic growth in South Asia, with reference to politics, markets, resources, and the world economy. Roy posits that, after an initial slow period of growth between 1950 and the 1980s, the region has been growing rapidly and fast catching up with the world on average levels of living. Why did this turnaround happen? Does it matter? Is it sustainable? The author answers these questions by drawing connections, comparisons, and parallels between the five large countries in the region: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It shows why, despite differences in political experience between these countries, similarities in resources and markets could produce similar trajectories. Home to a fifth of the world’s population, South Asia’s transformation has the power to change the world. Most accounts of the process focus on individual nations, but by breaking out of that mould, Roy takes on the region as a whole, and delivers a radical new interpretation of why the economy of South Asia is changing so fast.

Анотація: This book, comprised of entirely original research, collects data on the socioeconomic situation of China’s 56 ethnic groups. Although the majority of China’s population is of the Han nationality (which accounts for more than 90% of China’s population), the non-Han ethnic groups have a population of more than 100 million. China has officially identified, except for other unknown ethnic groups and foreigners with Chinese citizenship, 55 ethnic minorities. In addition, ethnic minorities vary greatly in size. With a population of more than 15 million, the Zhuang are the largest ethnic minority, and the Lhoba, with a population of only about three thousand, the smallest. China’s ethnic diversity has resulted in a special socioeconomic landscape for China itself. However, till presently, a complete socioeconomic picture of China’s ethnic groups – especially of its smallest ethnic minorities – still remained unclear. How different have China’s ethnic groups been in every sphere of daily life and economic development during China’s fast transition period? In order to answer these questions, we have created a detailed and comparable set of data for each of China’s ethnic groups. This book presents, in an easy-to-use format, a broad collection of social and economic indicators on China’s 56 ethnic groups. This useful resource profiles the general social and economic situations for each of these ethnic groups. These indicators are compiled and estimated based on the regional and local data gathered from a variety of sources up to 2012.

Анотація: This book is an ethnographic case study, based on first hand observation, of family businesses in the northern Vietnamese village of Ninh Hi??p along the Red River Delta, which became a major hub for textiles in the wake of the country’s shift towards market socialism. The author explores how the traders experience, negotiate and react to a marketization process that is markedly shaped by the state’s morally ambivalent governance, and which can be thus characterised as an admixture of socialist and neoliberal ideologies. How are traders shaping the political economy of Vietnam? How has the labour force changed as textile-handling has become an increasingly profitable undertaking? Horat explores the relationships between traders and local authorities, as well as changing ideas of masculinity and femininity. Focusing on the redevelopment of the market landscape and the increasing share of private ownership that have given rise to great uncertainty, this book provides a well-timed inquiry into current debates of economic development in a uniquely shaped market environment. Esther Horat is Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She wrote her doctoral thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale, Germany, as well as at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Анотація: This book examines Indonesia’s national regulatory framework in comparison to trade regionalism. As a relatively new phenomenon compared to trade regionalism, financial regionalism has successfully shaped cooperative networks among financial authorities in East Asia. In this incisive new book, Eko Saputro explores how new financial alliances and regulatory frameworks will allow Indonesia to rapidly take a new place at the global table, bringing the explosive growth that other Asian countries have seen to the archipelago nation. This book will be of equal value to academics, policy makers, students, and scholars, both in the region and abroad.

Анотація: This book, the second of two volumes, continues the authors’ ground-breaking re-examination of India’s history and political economy. Using the novel perspective of analysing India as an organization, volume two closely considers the country’s fortunes in the twentieth century and how the country’s history and political economy have been brought to bear on its functioning. This volume describes the economic fortunes of India in the second half of the 20th century. Beginning with the reconstruction of the Planning Commission and India's hybrid model of economic planning, the authors describe the multiple shocks weathered by the system before being replaced with a fully free market model after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Chapters consider the stresses placed on India’s organisation by the shocks of the twentieth century, from its experiments with a socialist economy to its embrace of the Washington consensus in the 1980s. The impact of the invasion of China in 1962 and India’s struggle to find its feet post-partition are also given detailed analysis. The book’s unique perspective helps to shed light, for the first time, on how India’s organisational structure negotiated the country’s immense historical and cultural inheritance with the stresses of a twentieth century nation state. The authors consider what lessons can be drawn from India's successes and failures at aligning its goals and organisations with its heritage and mission.

Анотація: This book sheds light on the dollarization trends of four transitional economies in Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Moving beyond the tendency to focus on the Latin American experience of dollarization and prolonged high inflation, the chapters in this book compare how payment dollarization has been more persistent than other types of dollarization in this region due to network externalities. The book illustrates that dollarization started in the underdeveloped financial system in these countries and that dollarization interacted with financial development, which is in contrast to dollarization in Latin America. This project extends the frontiers of empirical studies on dollarization. It will be of interest to students, researchers and policy makers concerned with dollarization and economics in Southeast Asia.

Анотація: This book describes various methods of analysis for ascertaining the effects of agglomeration economies, which are important for formulating regional economic policies. Specifically, it describes new analytical approaches using productivity and productive efficiency analyses as methods for understanding agglomeration economies. Additionally, the book provides application results for Japanese regions and proposes desirable regional policies. According to the new analytical methods advocated in this book, agglomeration economies are larger in major metropolitan areas than in local regions, and in the manufacturing sector than in the non-manufacturing sector. These results are consistent with general knowledge. Moreover, the majority of productivity growth pertaining to regional economies is explainable by improvements to accessibility. Improving accessibility for regions reduces transportation costs between them and strengthens agglomeration economies, which, in turn, enable the sustainable development of regional economies. Therefore, this book highlights the need not only to reinforce existing agglomeration areas, but also to form a network between these agglomerations and to strengthen it, so as to realize regional economic growth despite a decreasing population.

Анотація: This book evaluates the evolution of regulatory policy in advanced countries and discusses how policy changes in one country can affect other nations in a globalized world. Separated in two parts, the first half of the book focuses on policy in developed countries and regulatory diffusion from Europe to Asia. The second part looks at the business impact of policy developments in a number of Southeast Asian countries. Key chapters discuss Asia's response to EU chemical regulations, the diffusion of private food standards, and the effect of chemical regulations in Malaysia, Vietnam, and Japan. These contributions are written by leading scholars in the field and the book is likely to be of interest to students, researchers and policy makers concerned with regulation changes in East Asia.

Анотація: This book is the first to cover the research of whole aspects of international mobility to and from Taiwan of both skilled and unskilled workers. The migration of skilled workers is a field that has not been well researched, although it is becoming very important for the economic growth of newly developing countries. The “brain circulation” through which workers who return to their home country bring back technology and the business style of a developed country contributed greatly to Taiwan in the 1980s and1990s. However, according to the author’s research, there is a little expectation that returnees now will contribute as in the past, as the proportion of students leaving Taiwan to study abroad is decreasing. Taiwanese companies therefore are seeking skilled human resources from developed countries in other ways. The author also found that some Taiwanese have been to China, Singapore or Japan in response to companies and universities’ recruiting by offering high monetary compensation. This book clarifies those aspects of international skilled labor mobility to and from Taiwan and also analyzes the various issues regarding unskilled foreign laborers in Taiwan. There has been a gradual increase in unskilled foreign laborers, working both in industry and in domestic care in Taiwan. This book elucidates the various controversial issues arising from the increased presence of foreign laborers—for instance, the costs of employing foreign laborers, or problems related to the foreign workforce.

Анотація: This book presents an evaluation of the impacts of megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis on regional economies and subsequent reconstruction, as well as regional revitalization by the spatial economic model and dynamic macro and regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. The cases examined are the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Indian Ocean Tsunami. The study constructs three models of these megathrust earthquakes and the associated tsunami. In the first model, the regional CGE model is proposed with a database comprising the two-regional social accounting matrix for 2005 between the region comprising four disaster-affected prefectures of Japan and the non-disaster region. For the recursive dynamic regional CGE model, the model that expanded and improved the dynamic two-regional CGE model to reflect the incomplete employment conditions and the aging society is used to analyze the impacts of an earthquake and the construction of industrial clusters. In the second model, the interregional input–output model is proposed in order to analyze the impacts of the earthquake and rapid population decline and construction of a biogas electricity power plant. In the third model, a new economic geography (NEG) model is proposed, consisting of the 47 prefectures of Japan in order to investigate the impacts of the Great East Japan and Nankai megathrust earthquakes and the associated tsunami and to consider how they change the regional economies of Japan. Using these three models, the impacts of megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis on regional economies and reconstruction and on regional revitalization are evaluated.

Анотація: This book examines how Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam can provide instructive case studies of how Southeast Asia has negotiated pathways of development beyond crises and traps. At two ends of just one decade, 1997–2007, these five countries all  weathered the shocks of an East Asian financial crisis and a global financial crisis. Some economies might have buckled completely under those shocks and been condemned to long-term stagnation. Yet these economies emerged with continued if slower economic growth.    An important theme of this book is that their resilience has been partly derived from the pursuit of growth and competitiveness along lesser known pathways. The chapters of this book take a novel approach to South East Asia’s search for growth and improvement. They provide original insights into actual cases of intermediate ways of achieving growth, upgrading and income improvement in non-privileged sectors. Such cases hold more relevant lessons for the majority of developing countries than the experiences of highly developed economies.

Анотація: This book is about the basis and scope of impact that Taiwan – a democracy with a population of around 23 million – has on China, the most powerful remaining Leninist state which claims sovereignty over Taiwan and has a population of over 1.3 billion. It examines how Taiwan has helped China in its economic transformation, but argues that the former exercises greatest influence through its soft power. The expert and timely contributions in this book demonstrate how Taiwan exerts real influence in China through admiration of its popular culture, be it in music or literature, as well as its reach into politics and economics. As mainland Chinese visit Taiwan, they are most impressed with civility in everyday living based on a modernized version of the traditional Chinese culture. However, discussions in the book also reveal the limits of Taiwan’s impact, as the Chinese government tightly controls the narrative about Taiwan and does not tolerate any Taiwanese posing a threat to its monopoly of power.

Анотація: This book, the first of two volumes, considers that India must first be looked at as an organization in order to properly understand its present day situation. Chapters consider the political and philosophical foundations of the development of the economy of India, what went wrong and what can be done to rectify it. It’s vast scope challenges existing ideas about the country from the fields of economics, history and political science by offering a wholly new paradigm for understanding India’s past and present. Volume one embarks on a detailed analysis of India’s culture from an historical perspective. Chapters cover an immense scope of time and sources, from the origins of the Aryans in India to the ‘hostile takeover’ of India by Arabs, Turks, Mongols and British. The authors consider the effects of these occupations on India’s culture and structure. Using a vast temporal framework and equally impressive trove of sources – some only recently translated and never before published in English – this volume concludes by examining key pints in India’s history where its immense culture came close to collapse. .

Анотація: Verico discusses the ASEAN economic integration from dual perspectives of time span (trade, investment and finance) and framework (bilateral, sub-regional, regional and regional plus). The work is a comprehensive study of the integration in the wake of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)’s inauguration in late 2015. Examining various economic agreement levels from the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), Bilateral Free Trade Agreement (BFTA) and the AEC to financial integration in ASEAN, Verico attempts to envisage the future of ASEAN in completing its regional economic integration from trade to investment and finance. Verico argues that, in the absence of a customs union, ASEAN must utilize the open-regionalism frameworks of the ASEAN Plus One, ASEAN Plus Three, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and others in order to shift its economic integration level in this way.
